Played amid the Great War, the 1917 World Series saw the perennial contender New York Giants taking on a powerful Chicago White Sox squad who were making their second Fall Classic appearance. Already bolstered by the infamous 1919 Black Sox line-up, Chicago was able to win almost two thirds of their games in 1917. With Eddie Collins hitting .409 in the Series, along with the mound exploits of Ed Cicotte and Red Faber, the frustrated Giants were only able to win the third and fourth games at the Polo Grounds. Game 6 saw a pair of fourth inning errors cost the Giants a pair of runs, and Chicago never looked back, winning the Series in six games. This 1917 World Series program originates from Game 3, and it’s been nicely scored.
Large and perfect for display at 9 ¼” x 11”, the program features an image of Woodrow Wilson on the cover throwing out the ball at the opening of the 1917 American League season. With a flat and fairly clean cover, there are pencil notations including the score and date that have been placed in pencil above and below the top and bottom border. The spine shows light wear, with toning along all edges, as well as some light foxing and staining on the reverse. The interior exhibits light toning as well, with all pages firmly attached. There is some paper loss on the inside of the cover at the top staple, but this is minor, with the staples exhibiting some rust.
