On top of the baseball world with their third consecutive pennant in 1913, the New York Giants would then take on Mack’s Philadelphia Athletics in that year’s Fall Classic. Home advantage in the Series proved to be anything but, with the first three games won by the visiting opposition, and despite being shutout by Mathewson in the second game, the Athletics would score 23 runs in the Series for a decisive 4 games to 1 outcome. The 1913 Series was also noteworthy as it was Christy Mathewsons’s last postseason appearance, with Big Six losing the final game to long-time rival Eddie Plank. In this lot we have an unscored program for the Series from the Polo Grounds, along with a scorecard from the Philadelphia Press newspaper.
At roughly 9 ½” x 11”, the undated program features New York skipper John McGraw on the cover, with a number of interesting photos within. Creases are present on the cover and interior including a large vertical example from being folded, but this flaw is thankfully more apparent on verso. The cover - along with the interior pages remain firmly attached, with both staples present. There is a 2” spine split between the staples, but this does little to undermine the integrity of the publication. There is also some light staining and soiling, along with a small thumbnail size section of paper loss to one of the pages. The staples do exhibit some rusting, with foxing present along the inner edge of the center spread. Despite these imperfections, the program is complete and displays well. The accompanying score card is a one-page fold-over example, with advertising for the Philadelphia Press newspaper, which mentions that Ty Cobb’s “story” will be exclusively presented in the following day’s morning edition. The scorecard has been folded, and it exhibits a vertical crease, but remains fairly clean and problem-free otherwise. It appears to be scored in pencil, with the name of a former owner written a few times within the player’s margins. The perfect companion piece to the 1913 World Series program, the scorecard remains in pleasing condition, with both items ready to display.
