Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
It’s not every day you come across a game-worn jersey from the 1940s worn by a five-time Stanley Cup champion. This remarkable vintage wool sweater in Maple Leafs colors was worn by Don Metz, who took part in five Cup championships with Toronto between 1942 and 1949 despite appearing in only 172 regular season games. Metz, whose brother Nick shared four Cup wins with him as a member of the Maple Leafs, served in the Canadian military and missed two NHL seasons during World War II. This sensational sweater from a Kiwanis benefit game in 1943 has its original blue felt No. 9 sewn on the back and a blue felt maple leaf with the organization's "K" logo superimposed in white. The sweater remains in outstanding condition, with vibrant royal blue colors in the stripes, collar and cuffs of its sleeves. This incredible piece of hockey history was originally obtained from the Metz family and comes with a Classic Auctions LOA.
