Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/4/2014
Rare signatures from the family of the man who donated hockey's biggest prize and which includes a wonderful handwritten 4 1/4" x 7 1/4" letter from Lord Stanley's mother Emma, wife of Edward, the 14th Earl of Derby; a 1 3/4" x 3" cut signed by Lord Stanley's brother Edward, the 15th Earl of Derby, plus a 2 3/4" x 4 3/4" trimmed envelope signed by Lord Stanley's sister-in-law and wife of Edward, Mary Derby. Rounding things out is a small cut signed by Lord Stanley's son, the 17th Earl of Derby, Edward, who has signed the 1" x 2 3/4" piece simply as "Stanley". All signatures have been written with fountain pen and are wonderfully clear and legible. Lord Stanley’s mom Emma has written on official letterhead a seven sentence note to a Lord Bingham, asking him to dine with her and Lord Derby. The letter has some age spots and slightly rough edges but remains in very nice condition. Lord Stanley’s brother Edward’s cut is signed simply as “Stanley” along with what possibly could be 5 French words, with the reverse showing some residue from being in an album or such. The trimmed envelope from Edward’s wife Mary is postmarked “Tunbridge 89 and addressed to Dr. Purcell, Cancer Hospital, Fulham Road, London. Mary has signed to the left of the address, and the piece is in great shape with wear on the edges and a touch of residue from being in an album. And the cut from Lord Stanley’s son Edward is clean and clear and has been pasted on a slightly larger piece of white heavy stock.
