Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/4/2014
As unfortunate as it was, the idea for many fight fans that a black man, Jack Johnson, would be the reigning heavyweight champion didn't sit well, and it was during Independence Day, 1910 that white fighter Jim Jeffries would come out of retirement to reclaim the title from the talented Johnson. With a predominant white crowd in Reno, Nevada to witness the spectacle, Johnson hammered Jeffries for 14 rounds before Jeffries' corner threw in the towel. Offered is a full ticket from that July 4th, 1910 fight, measuring 2 1/2” x 6 1/2” and preserved in outstanding condition with slight wear to the edges and some slightly darkened areas, particularly on the reverse. A wonderful and historical keepsake from an era when race and sports met head on.
Also included are 2 reproduced photos and a replica ticket from the event.
