Kansas City, here we come! That’s where the Athletics moved there from Philadelphia for the 1955 American League season. This gorgeous 1955-58 KC Athletics game-worn jersey remains in wonderful condition. It sports a double-felt #34 with vivid colors on its back, which had a number change and previously sported number 2. Script “Athletics” in double felt is divided across the button-front flannel featuring navy blue piping that goes up and around the collar. Fantastic chenille A’s elephant patch is sewn on the left sleeve. A generic size “48” patch is sewn over the 46 on the original Wilson tagging on the left front tail. This scarce and desirable 1950s gamer was possibly worn by outfielder Bill Renna in Kansas City’s inaugural 1955 campaign and in 1956, and/or right-handers Duke Maas and Bob Grim in 1958, according to the two LOAs included. We swung for the fences in trying to identify the player(s) who wore this beauty though we have to settle for a little less than a home run. The two accompanying LOAs identifty the likely players as outfielder Big Bill Renna, who wore #34 during the 1955 Athletics’ inaugural season in Kansas City and again the following year. Right-hander Duke Maas also wore the number with the 1958 Athletics until he was traded to the Yankees for right-hander Bob Grim, who also wore #34 through the end of the season. The LOAs are from Legendary Auctions and Sports Collectors Digest.
The Legendary Auctions LOA attributes the jersey to possibly Renna and/or Grim.
The Sports Collectors Digest Authentic LOA attributes the jersey to possibly Maas and/or Grim, who were swapped for each other in a trade with the New York Yankees during the 1958 season.
The #34 on the 1957 Kansas City Athletics is attributed to right-hander Hal Raether, who made one two-inning appearance with the team during the season, three years after making his debut in his only other major league game during the Athletics’ final year in Philadelphia.
