Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/4/2014
An ultra-intriguing and rare hobby opportunity is offered here, with this fabulous lineup of all-time greats, pictured on little cards cut from cereal boxes during the first year of expansion back in 1967-68. Long thought to have been available from Post Cereal, the pictures were in fact released through General Mills Cereal and appeared on boxes of Cheerios, Wheaties and Country Corn Flakes. Large photos were on the backs of the boxes, with the star players giving advice on various basic hockey skills, while these small images appeared on the front and directed consumers to the back panel. Scarcity of these small cards is confirmed at PSA, with only 19 cards ever submitted to the grading firm and just nine earning a numerical mark above “Authentic”. This complete set is the one and only ensemble on the PSA Set Registry and thus claims Current Finest and All-Time Finest bragging rights. Check out the wide white borders around each colorful image - nice! A coveted Bobby Orr collectible, picturing the young phenom in an old-style Bruins uniform, as well as cards of Gordie Howe and Harry Howell, are graded VG 3, while better at VG-EX 4 is a Jean Beliveau card. Tops condition-wise is Stan Mikita at EX 5. All except Howe are the highest ever graded at PSA on their respective “lines” of the company’s famous Population Report. A joy to hold and behold are these rare treasures and certain to interest the hobby’s most serious collectors.
