Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/4/2014
The late Herb Gardiner’s signed 1921-22 WCHL Calgary Tigers contract is probably the earliest professional hockey contract of a Hall-of-Famer ever offered at auction! Gardiner led the Tigers to regular season and playoff titles in 1923-24 went on to win the Hart Trophy with the Montreal Canadiens in 1926-27 and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1958 and died in 1972. He placed a big black fountain pen signature that has held up very nicely below the signature of Tigers team president Fred Johnston at the bottom of this original Western Canada Hockey League 14” x 8 1/2" legal-size contract calling for a salary of $1,000. From the inaugural season of the Tigers, the contract comes with a new photo of Gardiner with the Habs and a James Spence LOA.
