The Toronto Maple Leafs were rounding back into championship form when Hall of Famer George Armstrong wore this wool jersey in the early-1960s. Chief became the Leafs’ captain in 1957-58 and would lead Toronto to Stanley Cup finals appearances in the following two seasons before hoisting the Cup himself four times in the 1960s. Armstrong’s white Maple Leafs number 10 game-worn wool sweater dates likely from circa 1960-61 or 1961-62 as evidenced by the two-eyelet tie-neck style, the absence of numbers on the sleeves and the slimmer team crest sewn on the front. The Leafs usually introduced new jerseys for the playoffs and would therefore wear the upcoming season’s jerseys in the playoffs and then into the following regular season. The numbers on the back and the team crest on the front with “Maple Leafs” spelled out in individual white felt letters are blue on white double felt, with some of the stitching having let go on the back. The captain’s C on the left breast has been restored with blue felt and is not the vintage original C. Doug Laurie Sports flag tag remains sewn into the inner right hip seam. We count 10 vintage team repairs, including four on the back, with two around the number “0”, a pair on the left sleeve and four more sewing fixes on the right sleeve. There are a variety of holes on this historic wool treasure with a HOFer’s pedigree that do not diminish its display.
