Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2014

Awesome 1948-50 WIHL Spokane Flyers game-worn wool jersey is attributed to the estate of Wyatt "Scoop" Bentley, who was the brother of HOFers Doug and Max. From 1948 until 1952, Scoop Bentley was the playing coach of the Flyers, who won the Western International Hockey League Championship against the Trail Smoke Eaters, then went on to win the Walter Brown Trophy as American senior hockey champions in both the 1948-49 and 1949-50 seasons. This blue, red and white has no tagging but we measure it out to roughly a size 44. Script “Flyers” crest on the front and numbers on the back are sewn-on double twill. There are marks on the back of the left sleeve, and unrepaired holes on this cool American wool gamer worn by a member of hockey’s great Bentley family. There is an unrepaired hole on the lower red stripe on the left sleeve, two more on the front, another on the front of the right shoulder yoke, one just below the back of the collar, and a couple of small holes on the back, including one between the white and red twill number 17.
A modern print of the Flyers’ 1949-50 National Senior Cyhampions team photo accompanies this wonderful wool sweater.
[red] Addendum; a 1949-50 Spokane Flyers program shows on the line-up sheet that #17 was worn by Paul Waldner and that Scoop Bentley wore #5 that season although it is still unknown for sure who wore #17 in 1948-49.[/red]
