Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/17/2014
From legendary artist Ken Danby (dec. 2007) comes two of his most acclaimed prints – “At The Crease”, and “Lacing Up”, matted and displayed in two identical (except for the size) wood frames, which shows the “At the Crease” measuring 21” x 25 ½”, while “Lacing Up” is a tad smaller at 21” x 24 ¼”. The prints, which are newer, open-edition prints, also differ slightly in size at approximately 16” x 21” and 16” x 20” respectively (as detailed on the back). The question of who the goalie actually was in the “At the Crease” painting was tossed about for years, with many speculating that either Ken Dryden or Tony Esposito could be the model. But it came to light after Danby’s death, via Wayne Gretzky, that the goalie’s name was Dennis Kemp, who tended nets for a Junior B team in Brantford coached by Walter Gretzky. The other print here, “Lacing Up” is also considered one of Danby’s best-loved images.
