Amazing 1936 Olympic bronze medal and official winner's diploma are the originals that were presented to Swedish long distance runner John Henry Jonsson for his third-place finish in the 5000-metres race in Berlin. Jonsson claimed one of Sweden's 20 Olympic medals in 1936, including nine bronzes, when he trailed only Olympic champion Gunnar Hockert of Finland and fellow Finn Lauri Lehtinen, who claimed silver, at the finish line. Jonsson went on to win a silver medal in the same event at the 1938 European Athletics Championships in Paris. His 1936 Olympic bronze medal measures 55 millimeters (2 1/8") in diameter and features the third incarnation of Italian artist Giuseppe Cassioli's classic "Trionfo" design which debuted on the face of the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic medals. Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, and "XI Olympiade Berlin 1936" with the Roman Colosseum in the background are depicted on the obverse with a triumphant athlete being carried by a crowd on the reverse. The medal has been nicely preserved overall and comes with its original presentation case featuring an embossed bell calling out to the "youth of the world" in German on the dried out suede-like cover. Jonsson's full name, his country and third place finish in the 5000-metre run are printed in German on his "XI Olympiade Berlin 1936" official medal winner's diploma which measures 15" x 19 1/2" and remains in superb, crease-free condition.
