Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2014

This distinctive photo-matched Cooper goalie's glove was worn by Flyers rookie Ron Hextall at Rendez-Vous '87 in Quebec City. Hextall, whose faint marker signature sits on the back of the glove, won the Vezina and Conn Smythe Trophies in 1987. He backed up HOFer Grant Fuhr and did not see any action for the NHL All-Star Team that split a two-game series against the Soviet national team at the Colisee. A picture of Hextall wearing this glove in his Rendez-Vous All-Star uniform is matched to a distinct mark, two small threads and the position of sewing lines on the back of the glove. There is a black mark below the C in “Cooper” on the back of the glove that clearly shows in the photo, as do the two loose threads to its left on the upper edge of the black nylon material just below the black thread sewing line. The curve at the top of that line shows in the photo and the sewing line on the left thumb matches up precisely with its placement in respect to the grommets on the outer edge of the thumb.
Black and light tan glove with “Cooper Custom Pro Shop” tagging sewn on the back of the cuff is a model that we do not see Hextall using with the Flyers. There is plenty of wear to the suede-like pocket and on the cheater, which has a tear on the bottom right corner.
Hextall was also named to the NHL First All-Star Team and NHL All-Rookie Team in 1986-87, and he finished runnerup to L.A.’s Luc Robitaille in voting for the Calder Trophy.
