"Big Ned", Vaclav Nedomansky, who would defect at age 30 from Czechoslovakia in 1974 to play for the Toronto Toros of the WHA, was a huge star in the old country, one of Europe's greatest players, and one who would suit up in 10 World Championships between 1965 and 1974, as well the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games. Offered here are Big Ned's 1971 and 1972 European Championship gold medals (2" in diameter), originally obtained from the personal collection of Nedomansky, with both medals in their original boxes and both in sensational, issue-free condition. The Czech team’s '72 title is considered one of the most stunning victories in international competition over the perennial champion Soviets. Although the latter won the 1971 world title, the Czechs were crowned European champs due to their better record in games involving European teams, highlighted by a 6-2 trouncing of the Soviets. The European Championships medals were awarded to European participants of the World Championships until 1991. Big Ned would enjoy a terrific career in North America after defecting, notching 253 points in 252 WHA games with the Toros and Birmingham Bulls, and 278 points in 421 NHL games with Detroit, St. Louis and New York.
