Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2014

Hall-of-Famer Herb Gardiner is pictured in his Calgary Tigers uniform here and would later join the Montreal Canadiens and play every second of every game in 1926-27, (as a 35-year old rookie) and win the Hart Trophy as the NHL's MVP. Wayne Gretzky is the only other player to win the Hart as a rookie! Featuring a stamp on the reverse from having been part of a 70-card set redeemed back in the day, this VG-EX+ 4.5 example is second only to an EX-MT+ 6.5 at PSA. A trio of Gardiner 4s meanwhile are tops among 18 unredeemed cards. Although the Paulin’s cards have always been catalogued as a 1923-24 issue, extensive research by hobby veteran and author Bobby Burrell actually points to a two-year promotion beginning a year later, thus giving a 1924-26 time frame for the cards which feature men who played for teams in the Western Canadian Hockey League.
