Always fascinating is correspondence from NHL teams and the two we have here are no exception. From October 31, 1940 is a typed page on Maple Leaf Gardens letterhead stating that Bazel Doran, a minor league player, accepts $30.00 for outright release from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Signed by Doran and in wonderful condition, this letter, which measures 8 1’2” x 11”, is just two paragraphs but sad in the fact that Doran wouldn’t make the big club. (He would spend six seasons in the minors). The second letter, also in wonderful condition, is dated September 24th, 1952 and on Maple Leaf Gardens letterhead, addressed to Joe Gorman in Ottawa from Leafs Chief Scout Bob Davidson on the subject of dealing with a couple of players who might not want to play where the Leafs want them to play. Davidson’s signature is absolutely clear and bold. Joe Gorman was the son of Tommy Gorman, a founder of the NHL who would become part owner of the original Ottawa Senators, eventually general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, and in the 1940s owned the Ottawa Senators of the Quebec Senior Hockey League. Joe would ultimately work to bring back the Senators to the NHL and gave his permission to use the Senators name.
