A fine night indeed in midtown Manhattan as the brand new Madison Square Garden opened its doors, folks hustled through the turnstiles, and took in the sights and sounds as the visiting Montreal Canadiens played the new franchise that had morphed from the defunct Hamilton Tigers – the New York Americans. We have a rare press photo from that inaugural game at MSG held on December 16, 1925, showing Americans and Habs players taking the initial draw at center ice while others on the ice have placed themselves far back from the puck drop, all in front of what seems to be a packed house. An absolutely cool and fascinating vintage photo from a historic game. Measuring 8” x 10” and showing light creasing and 2 small tears on the top border, the photo has the typed description on the back along with the “Underwood and Underwood” stamp and date. The typed wire description attached to the back reads as: New York Hockey Players Conquered by Canadiens. Score 3-1, at New Madison Square Garden. At the formal inauguration of Professional Hockey in New York at the New Madison Square Garden, New York City, the Canadiens of Montreal beat the New York hockey team 3-1. They played for the Prince of Wales Trophy. Photo shows the start of the game. Dec. 16, 1925.
