Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2014

It was the Chicago Black Hawks vs the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Finals, and in the end, Chicago, led by the goaltending of Glenn Hall and the play of youngsters Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita making their first Stanley Cup appearances, would take out the Wings in 6 games and hoist the first Windy City Stanley Cup since 1938. We have a program from that big series, from game 2 on April 8, 1961 at Detroit’s Olympia Stadium, when the Wings would even the series at one apiece with a 3-1 win. This program, measuring 8 ½” x 11”, is complete with 28 pages, although as is the case with many vintage programs, the middle lineup page is loose. But that, a slight opening at the top of the spine, and a pencil notation inside the front cover reading as “Saturday April 8, 1961 Detroit 3, Chicago 1”, are all that is wrong with this program from the historic series that saw Sawchuk, Howe, Ullman et al pitted against Hall, Pilote, Hull, Mikita, Nesterenko and the gang.
