Before the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit it was the Olympia, opened in 1927 and the scene of Howe and Lindsay, the Beatles, boxing, Stanley Cups and so much more over the years. Just a grand old barn that would see its last Red Wings game played in 1979 and which was demolished in 1987. Out with the old and in with the new. We have the inaugural program, the first NHL game played at the Olympia that featured the Detroit Cougars against the Ottawa Senators on November 22, 1927, and not only is it the first of its kind we've ever seen but the 7" x 10" gem has been preserved in remarkable condition with the 40 pages intact with no markings, and just a small touch of creasing on the covers to note. A rare and important program to be sure. How did this big first game turn out? Detroit’s Johnny Sheppard scored the first goal in the new building but the visiting Senators would notch a couple and win 2-1. The Cougars, which had moved from Victoria B.C., would soon become the Falcons in 1930, and in 1932 new owner James E. Norris decided to rename his club which would forever after be the Red Wings.
