Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/17/2014
The great Eddie Short was haunted by the memory of his involvement in the tragic on-ice incident that ended the career of fellow HOFer Ace Bailey, and so he began wearing protective headgear and encouraged the rest of his teammates to do the same. Talk about a pioneer! It took another horrible on-ice incident, the 1968 death of Bill Masterton from a head injury, to spur a renewed look at head protection in the NHL and it was not until some 50 years after the Shore-Bailey incident that the league adopted regulations enforcing the mandatory use of certified headgear. Offered is an actual red leather helmet worn by the legendary Shore while lining up for the Boston Bruins during the 1930s. Loads and loads of wear on this vintage piece that goes back some 75-80 years now, with very firm padding for the back of the head, and more protective panels on the sides and across the forehead, which has a faded and faint "Taylor" logo embossed on the front. There is a patch repair on the front of the inner left panel and six leather straps sewn onto the top of the padding form a crown that gathers in a doubled-leather ring on the top. Comes with a Shore family LOA.
