How cool is this! Two wartime letters that include a handwritten 3-pager on 5" x 8" paper dated Oct. 31st, 1944 from legendary Leafs goalie and Canadian soldier Turk Broda who was stationed in England at the time, to coach Hap Day and signed as "Your roommate, Turk", plus a page and a half typed reply from Mr. Day. Turk writes that he "would like to hear this spring that you have the old mug back in the Gardens". (The Leafs would win it that spring). We also include Broda's signature which was cut from the original envelope and signed as a unique "Gnr. W. S. Broda" (Gnr. Stands for gunner army rank). Day's typed reply back to Turk, measuring 8 1/2" x 11" and featuring lots of hockey info, isn't signed but his initials CHD are at the bottom. Turk also goes on to say it’s damp in England, talks more about how he wishes the Leafs would win it all and mentions the injured Conn Smythe and how after locating the hospital Smythe was in, found out he’d been sent home. Just a great letter written in clear and dark fountain pen. Hap Day’s typed letter back to Turk is dated Nov. 15, 1944, with Day talking about how “old Sweeney has started off with a bang”, along with “Saw Mrs. Broda after the game Saturday night and she is looking grand”, plus lots of other great stuff. Condition-wise, it’s splendid, with a corner crease and some yellowing from age. Just an awesome lot.
