Stunning, even stupifying early-1960s Montreal Canadiens #23 game-worn wool sweater is a wonder to behold. The placement of the sewn-on Canadiens crest on the front and the numbers on the sleeves dates this game-worn jersey from the 1961-62 season. The CH in red, white and blue triple felt sits neatly centered on the Habs' distinctive band around the middle of the jersey, completely covering the blue portion and well into most of the top and bottom white bands, though not touching the red wool. The white and blue double twill number 23 on both sleeves sit completely on the red wool above the blue and white bands. Al MacNeil, who coached the Canadiens to the 1971 Stanley Cup, was the only player to wear #23 in 1961-62. The defenseman played 61 regular season games and five more in the playoffs in his only season with the Habs, who finished 42-14-4 with a league-leading 98 points to claim their fifth straight Prince of Wales Trophy. Photos of MacNeil show the proper placement of the team crest and numbers on the sleeves, as well as those on the back which are white and blue double felt, with old school criss-cross stitching through the middle of the white felt. The "L.J. Parent & Fils Ltee Montreal" tag sewn inside the left rear hem is visible in one of the photos of MacNeil. There is a team repair in the middle of the front tail, another above and to the right of the "3" on the back and one more sewing fix low on the back of the left sleeve. Several unrepaired holes throughout the tie-neck sweater do not diminish its display. A beautiful example of an early-1960s Canadiens game-worn jersey!
