Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2014

Looking like he's barely out of his teens is the Rocket as poses nicely in this Associated Press B&W photo that measures 7" x 9" with the description on the back, dated as 3-7-45, reading as "Maurice Richard, wingman for the Montreal Canadiens, is the leading scorer of the National Hockey League", which he was as he ended that campaign with his legendary 50 goals in 50 games and would finish second in points with 73 behind teammate Elmer Lach who collected 80. Rocket appears so young in this photo that we believe AP used an earlier picture, possibly from the 1943-44 season, or even in his first appearance in '42-43 when he suited up for 16 games. This very early Rocket photo, nicely preserved with only some handling evidence to note, has the AP markings and typed caption on the back and a few more industry markings on the top and side borders of the front. It’s also stamped as Mar 1945.
