Breathtaking 112-year old treasure presented to deceased HOFer Dickie Boon brings forth the story of the exploits of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association's hockey club shortly after the turn of the 20th century. Boon, who is credited with initiating the poke check, captained the Montreal AAA squad that captured the Stanley Cup in March of 1902 with a close, hard-fought best-of-three series with the defending Cup-champion Winnipeg Victorias. Montreal challenged Winnipeg after having won the CAHL championship and headed west, with over 4000 fans packing Winnipeg Arena for game one, won 1-0 by the Victorias. The AAA took the second game 5-0 and in the third Art (Archie) Hooper and Jack Marshall scored early and Montreal hung on for a 2-1 victory, earning the nickname "Little Men of Iron" because of their stubborn defence. The engraving on the interior of the 14-karat gold pocket watch by Waltham reads "Presented to R.R. Boon by the Montreal Hockey Club - 1902", while the exterior features the club's distinctive winged wheel logo with "Hockey Champions of the World" sprawled across a banner and "1902" below that. Boon helped the MAAA to successfully defend its Cup title in February of 1903, and then left the team to found the Montreal Wanderers, who he managed to Stanley Cup titles four times from 1906-10. Originally presented to Boon, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1952, the watch has remained a family heirloom since his death in 1961 and is now being offered to the hobby. Preserved in magnificent condition for the past 100-plus years, it remains in working condition with various surface scratches from proud wear. This stirring piece of Stanley Cup and hockey history is truly museum-worthy and will render its new owner incredibly proud. Comes with a signed LOA from the Boon family. There is a bluish line on the face. “81441” is stamped inside the bottom of the front cover. The inside rear cover is stamped “A.W.C. Co. 14K” along with a cross hallmark and “81441”, and there are also a few etched repair/maintenance notations.
