Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2013
Nice vintage Montreal Expos gamer worn by outfielder Mike Vail during the 1983 season, on a team which included such Expos legends as Gary Carter, Tim Raines, Andre Dawson, and Steve Rogers. Just a magical time to be an Expos fan. Sewn in the collar is a "Rawlings 44" patch with "117" and "133" handwritten on each side of the patch. The collar material shows stained evidence that the garment was well used, with various marks noticeable on both the front and back. The former "Expos" nameplate was removed from the jersey, which had been recycled by an Expos' farm team, and the surname letters spelling "Vail" are the original ones from then. Previous wearers of number 33 on the Expos were Dan Briggs in 1981 and Brad Gulden in '82, but there are no signs of either name being applied or removed at any such time. This game-used beauty has a "Set 1, 1981" tag sewn on the inside hem. The Expos would finish third in the National League at the end of the 1983 season, eight games back of Eastern Division leaders, the Philadelphia Phillies.
