Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013

It was the final of five Canada Cups, the 1991 edition, which saw Canada defeat the U.S. in a two-game final to capture the championship. Former player-turned-referee Paul Stewart worked the series, and it was during the final game that Stewart kept a game-used puck for his personal collection. Offered is the puck Stewart had saved, with the “Labatt Coupe Canada Cup” logo on the face and the “1991 R.A. Eagleson Tournament Chairman” decal on the other side. This game-used Canada Cup puck shows nice game wear, with scuffs and marks, but retains a clear and excellent look with no chips or skate marks. Comes with a fine provenance - an LOA from Mr. Stewart himself!
Paul Stewart had taken an abrupt turn in his hockey career. He had been a hot-tempered, feisty player in various leagues which included stints in the WHA and 21 games in the NHL with the Quebec Nordiques, and along the way he gained a reputation as a fighter, a guy with a serious edge. With the WHA Cincinnati Stingers in 1977-78 for example, he accumulated 241 PIM in 40 games, so it was a novelty to see the former tough guy handing out penalties as an NHL referee. But Stewart, with his great knack of handling players, probably because he was once one himself, became one of the most respected on-ice officials of his era.
