A rare and dreamed-of occurrence is the sighting of Bert Corbeau’s elusive and coveted V145-1 card #25, with an oh so infrequent opportunity to secure one offered here. The Corbeau card is the one that the William Paterson Company released only a small quantity of, so as not to have to give away too many pairs of free skates, which was the prize for those collectors back in 1923-24 who assembled a complete set of Paterson Hockey League Bar cards and mailed them to the Brantford, Ontario firm. Redeemed sets had a hole punched in them and were stamped, like this one, “cancelled” before being returned with the skates. Evidence of once having been glued is on the otherwise blank back here, with this example the only “cancelled” one ever encapsulated by PSA and thus highest ever graded by the firm, although a single non-redeemed Corbeau card, (Good 2), also shows up on the company’s Population Report. ‘’Rare’’ is a word that tends to be over-used in the hobby, but certainly applies here, with Simon Bourque rating this cherished Corbeau card as his favorite from his staggering collection because of the rarity. Yet another fascinating, attention-grabbing encapsulated prize, this one is truly riveting and thought-provoking!
