It would be five years before Lord Stanley donated the silver chalice bearing his name, and just a year into his new title of "Lord Stanley of Preston", that would see him sign this 4" x 5" postal cover, dated May 19, 1887 on the red postal stamp. This postal cover, which shows some black marks on the perimeters and some natural aging, is addressed to a British Major and signed "Stanley of Preston" in black fountain pen. The address and signature were written with wonderful flair, and is truly an extraordinary example of Lord Stanley's exceptional penmanship. The 4" x 5" postal cover has been attached to a thin cardboard backing measuring 5" x 7". Lord Stanley would pass away in 1908 at age 67. If he only knew what his little piece of silver hardware would become. Lord Stanley, the 16th Earl of Derby, and his wife, became hockey fans during his gig as Canada's Governor General (1888-1893) when some of their sons started to play the game. Lord Stanley donated the little 7" trophy in 1892, a year before he returned to England. Because of the impact the Lord had on the game, he was inducted into the HHOF in 1945 in the "Honoured Builders" category.
