Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2013
The scarce signature of the great Howie Morenz rests at the top of this wonderful original art drawing of Chicago Black Hawks goaltender Lorne Chabot. And just below, Chabot himself added his mark in vintage fountain pen ink. Signed by the artist, Arthur Hass, and dated 1935, the art deco style drawing is a perfect vehicle for the two wonderful signatures. While both autographs are bold and legible, slight water damage has lightened the first half of each, turning the black ink to a green/blue. Morenz passed away in 1937 in what was one of the saddest tales in hockey history, making his signature very tough to obtain in any form or condition. The work is done on heavy-weight drawing paper using a mixture of charcoal, pen & ink and measures to 9" x 14" in size. Obtained from the daughter of artist Arthur Haas who was a commercial artist by trade. Haas gathered the signature back in 1934-35, around the time he completed the drawing. Will come with a letter of authenticity.
