The benefactor of the most recognizable trophy in sports, Lord Stanley, is commemorated with these four items issued by the Preston Guild in 1902, following Stanley’s return to England from Canada. The blue and white plate with scalloped edging and gold coloured trim is 9 1/2” in diameter and states “Earl Derby K.G. Guild Mayor” beneath Stanley’s image, set to the right of Guild Hall, while “Sept 1902 Preston Guild” appears on a banner above. There are five rather large chips: at 12, 1, 3, 5, and 7 o’clock, but the eye is drawn to Lord Stanley! A crack about 7” long runs along the back and it is barely visible on the front, save for 1” just shy of 6 o’clock. Meanwhile, two of the 1 1/4” medallions depict Stanley and his wife on one side, encircled by the text: ``The Earl of Derby K.G. Guild Mayor of Preston and The Countess of Derby.” The final medallion is elegantly understated, bearing the Earl`s image with ``STANLEY`` marked underneath, while the reverse portrays a coat of arms. A fascinating collection showing the mug of the man who donated the most famous one in hockey!
