Awesome shot of the Stanley Cup as it looked back in 1938, perched in front of Black Hawks coach Bill Stewart. Chicago claimed its second Cup in five years in the spring of 1938. Stewart’s Hawks took out the Montreal Canadiens with a 2-1 series win in their quarter-final, and got past the New York Americans in another 2-1 series win in the semis to face Toronto for the Cup. The two finalists split the first two games at Maple Leaf Gardens before the Black Hawks won the next two at Chicago Stadium to claim the Cup. This original 14x11 print shows Stewart looking up lovingly at the silver bowl at the top of the cigar-shaped trophy on April 14, 1938. Some of the engraving on the barrel is clear to see, including the 1934 Black Hawks’ band at the level of Stewart’s left hand. Curiously the bands are engraved in ascending order with the most recent winners towards the top, which has several blank bands. The print exhibits lots of handling with creasing throughout, tears on the edges, faded black notations in the upper left and some black marks on the bottom edge. That said, it is a fascinating piece of Black Hawks history that offers a great view on the Cup’s late-1930s incarnation! Mounted recessed within a beige matte and displayed in a 19 3/4" x 16 3/4" wood frame.
