Historical Hockey Memorabilia Winter 2012

Classic studio pose of the powerhouse Ottawa Hockey Club on the front of a postcard is not necessarily rare, but with the back signed by team captain Harvey Pulford? Now that's rare! Pulford is pictured sitting, second from the left and played "point" for the Ottawa dynasty that held the Stanley Cup from March of 1903 to March of 1906. Pulford had actually been a member of the Ottawa squad since 1893 and was one of the original members elected to Hockey's Hall of Fame in 1945, five years after his death. "Sincerely Harvey Pulford" appears in bold fountain pen on the reverse, where evidence of scrapbook removal/paper loss does not affect the autograph. Multiple creases are to mention, along with the names of the players written on the front. Also enshrined in the Hall of Fame are Harry Westwick, Billy Gilmour and Frank McGee (all standing), as well as Alf Smith (sitting beside Pulford and directly in back of Lord Stanley's coveted silverware). The Silver Seven did not surrender the Cup until Lester Patrick and the Montreal Wanderers defeated them in the spring of 1906. Ottawa's reign had included nine successful Cup defenses. We are not aware of another Harvey Pulford signature ever having been offered for public sale, rendering this fabulous find tantalizing indeed.
