The 21st Ice Hockey World Championships were held from February 26 to March 7, 1954 in Stockholm, Sweden. Russia won the gold medal with a record of 6 wins and a single tie. Canada did record a loss and took silver. Offered is a wonderful wool Team USSR sweater worn by Soviet player Viktor Shuvalov. The 5-time Soviet all star and USSR league champion often played with stars Bobrov and Evgeny Babich. Shuvalov, who scored 222 goals in 150 Russian league games, was described as "equally outstanding" as his more famous linemates. Viktor was inducted into the Russian and Soviet Hockey Hall of Fame in 1953.
The teal and wool sweater features a high, rounded collar with cream-colored accent stripes at the arms and waist that have taken on a bluish tone from running of the dyes. A few stitched team repairs can be found on the front and the jersey does show nearly a dozen material holes and damage around the collar which has not been fixed. This woolen treasure was obtained directly from the original wearer in Russia, and to our belief, this is the oldest Russian jersey to ever be offered for public auction. The jersey was worn during the 1954 World Hockey Championship matches and photos from the event depict players wearing uniforms both with and without the white felt "CCCP" on front. Shuvalov recalls it originally had the "CCCP" on front and the sweater does appear to have the outline from the once-stitched-on lettering but we must point out that several players did wear jerseys without the CCCP. Also included is a game program from the 1954 Worlds in excellent condition with inked notes on the cover and interior.
