Sweden made it three straight Olympic bronze medals in hockey in Calgary in 1988 with their third straight third-place finish of the decade. Offered here is the 1988 Olympic bronze medal awarded to Swedish defenseman Lars Karlsson, complete with its full ribbon and original presentation box, as well as Karlsson's Calgary Olympics participation medal. 1987 IIHF world champion Sweden pummeled France 13-2 to open the 1988 Olympic tournament before a stunning 1-1 tie against Poland, the first of three stalemates for the Swedes in the round robin. They beat Czechoslovakia and West Germany in the final round between a 7-1 loss to the gold medal champion U.S.S.R., settling for third place and bronze when Finland upset the Soviets in their final game to claim the silver. Karlsson contributed a goal and three assists for the Swedes, who were paced by Anders Eldebrink's 10 points, including four goals and six assists.
Solid and substantial Olympic bronze medal measures a shade under 2 3/4" in diameter and features an athlete with an olive wreath and a native American in profile on the face with various Olympic sports equipment such as skis, poles, sleds and skates on the right side. The opposite side of the medal features the Calgary 1988 logo in the middle above the Olympic rings with "XV Olympic Winter Games" in English and French arched along the top. The bottom edge of the medal has "Ice Hockey" engraved in English and French. The bronze medal has a few tiny scratches and is otherwise in exquisite condition, resting with its tri-colored ribbon in its original grey plush-lined Calgary '88 blue presentation box. The 2 1/2" diameter Calgary '88 participation medal comes in its original brown box. A great opportunity to add to your collection an original Olympic bronze medal which comes with a Classic Auctions letter of authenticity.
