The first edition of the World Cup of Hockey featured eight teams divided into two groups. The European Group, whose games were all played in Europe, included the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, and Sweden. The North American Group played in North American cities and included Canada, Russia, Slovakia, and the United States. Little was expected of the German National Team, given the context of the hockey powerhouses they would face. However, in the biggest surprise of the tournament, Germany defeated Czech Republic 7-1 on August 31st at home in Garmisch, eliminating the Czechs and sending the Germans into the quarter-finals. Germany then traveled to Montreal and was knocked out of the Quarters by Team Canada by a score of 4-1.
This striking black airknit German National Team uniform was worn during the games of the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. Nike sweater is tagged by the company in the collar and displays the swoosh on the right shoulder. The front crest design is sublimated while all numbers and letters are added in tackle-twill. The inner hem holds a heat-pressed inventory control bar code label with the Nike Team Sports identifier. Germany wore their black jerseys in the August 28th 8-3 loss to Finland and the August 31st 7-1 victory over the Czechs.
German goaltender Josef Heiss was stellar between the pipes in the 7-1 shocking of the Czechs on August 31st, 1996 at the World Cup of Hockey. The game, held in Garmisch, Germany, must have brought the nation to its feet. Heiss was chosen first star and his number "30" airknit by Nike is tagged in the collar in size 56. Heiss posted a 2.50 average and was also chosen third star in the 4-1 loss to Canada. We spot a few smaller scuffs and marks on this shirt with some pilling at the cuff. Comes with a letter of authenticity from the NHLPA.
