Historical Hockey Memorabilia Winter 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/22/2012
Mighty crude by modern standards, this plexi-glass-like affair designed to protect goalies, among others, from suffering cuts and gashes to the face was revolutionary in its day. "Louch Shatterproof Face Protector for All Sports" reads the original label still affixed to the bottom of the clear mask, below the 2x2 breathing aperture. Jacques Plante cut eyes holes among modifications he made to this type of mask on the road to developing the fiberglass model he introduced to the NHL in 1959. The original red leather straps and chin pad are intact with light and not-unexpected scratches to the clear mask on this stellar example of a Louch mask.
