Historical Hockey Memorabilia Winter 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/22/2012
Beautiful example of a wood stick used to play ice polo, an American precursor to ice hockey which peaked in the late 19th century. It's hard to imagine coming across a nicer example of this circa 1880s/1890s sports artifact which has the legendary Spalding logo stamped on the curved blade. The name of a former owner is etched into one side of the stick which measures 40" from tip to top. Please see our website description for more information. The Spalding trademark is stamped upside down on one side of the blade of this one-piece rarity, with “NO.” and “O” on either side of the famous “A.G. Spalding & Bros, A.D. 1876” baseball logo. The blade displays wear at the toe with a small gouge on the top edge of above the logo. The stick has a darker look to the wood up to the top of the shaft, which has a lighter, unfinished tone, with minor wear defects from game use.
