Historical Hockey Memorabilia Winter 2012

The 1909-1910 Montreal Canadiens campaign was the team's inaugural season and also the first season of the National Hockey Association (NHA). The 1910 Montreal Canadiens operated as 'Les Canadiens' and were owned by Ambrose O'Brien of Renfrew, Ontario and one of four franchises he owned in the NHA. The team, captained by Jack Laviolette, would struggle in its first year, but a 38-goal performance by Newsy Lalonde, considering the team's total goals were 59 on the year, showed promise of great things to come. This charming vintage cabinet photo by Andre Dumas Studios was most likely presented to a player or executive given its size of 20" x 24", including the matting. The collage style images feature the entire roster along with Eddie McCafferty pictured in a suit. Included are Jos. Catterinich, Jack Laviolette, Newsy Lalonde, Didier Pitre (all honoured members of the Hall of Fame) along with Chapleau, Millaire, Duckett, Chartrand, Decary, Poulin and Bernier. The images are so sharp that you can make out wear and details on the sweaters! The photo itself measures 15.5" by 20" and is in near-excellent condition despite a scuff to the far left that does not affect any of the images and some slight warping of the backing board. This is the first time we have seen this photograph and nothing like it has ever been noted in the hobby prior to this offering. Words like rare and scarce are not descriptive enough to capture the feeling surrounding this one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to obtain such a visually-stunning treasure from the historic franchise's first outing.
