Historical Hockey Memorabilia Winter 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/22/2012
This fascinating pair of original Gordie Howe artwork dates from the latter part of the 1950s. Howe had four Stanley Cups to his credit already when both were published, including a syndicated "This Day in Sports" by Hollreiser published by the Chicago Tribune-N.Y. News Syndicate in 1958. This original 10" x 4 3/4" piece of illustration board has the art editor's markings and headers glued to the artist's caricature and blurb about one of Mr. Hockey's hat tricks over the Maple Leafs five years earlier. Another striking likeness of Howe was drawn by Boston-area sports artist Bill Robinson. The Red Wings' great is pictured in the bottom right of the 14" x 7 3/4" illustration board with a caricature from late in the 1958-59 season when Detroit ultimately missed the playoffs for the first time in Gordie Howe's career. This remarkable artwork used for publication remains affixed to its original 15 1/2" x 9 1/2" black illustration board background.
