Harry Lawrence "Little Dempsey" Aurie was a hockey right winger who played 11 seasons in the National Hockey League for the Detroit Cougars, Detroit Falcons and Detroit Red Wings. Aurie was considered by owner James Norris as the heart and soul of the Detroit NHL franchise from 1927 through 1938. Larry was one of the smallest players to ever play the game, at only 5-foot-6, 148 pounds, and he established himself as one of Detroit's earliest hockey stars, combining a deft scoring touch with excellent speed and puck handling skills. He was instrumental in the Red Wings' winning their first Stanley Cup championships in 1936 and was a big part of the team's push for the Cup 1937. Although Larry did not dress for any of the post-season matches during the 1937 run, his contributions were recognized by the presentation of this marvelous golden bauble. The simple band is punctuated at the top by a hefty solitaire diamond with crossed sticks on one shank and the well-worn logo of the Detroit Red Wings on the other. The inner band is engraved with the maker's hallmark, a 14K gold marking and the scripted name of the recipient "Larry Au?" with the tail end of his surname lost to years of wear. In terms of condition, the ring does show its age from decades of display and handling but it has not lost a shred of its historic significance and tremendous appeal.
