Historical Hockey Memorabilia Winter 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/22/2012
Hockey's coffee connections go back further than current sponsorship by Canada's largest restaurant chain. Major Frederic McLaughlin, first owner of the Chicago Black Hawks, amassed his fortunes in the family business, WF McLaughlin Coffee Company. McLaughlin was also an international level polo player and like many hockey aficionados, he loved golf. Weather permitting, he played at the Old Elm Club daily. It was there that he won this slender, urn-shaped, silver trophy and its shorter and more rotund sibling. Both bear the mark of Chicago's oldest guild jeweller, C.D. Peacock. The taller one weighs about 440 grams, stands 10" high on a 3 " base and is engraved: "Old Elm Club 1933 Choice Score won by Major Frederic McLaughlin" while the smaller checks in at 4 1/2" tall, 2 3/8" base and weighs 120 grams. LOA from his son, W.F. McLaughlin.
