Charlie "Chuck" Gardiner's career and life were both far too short. Born in Scotland, Gardiner's family arrived in Winnipeg when he was seven. He wasn't a great skater so he ended up in goal and went on to become one of the all-time greats, backstopping a usually poor Chicago Black Hawks team for 7 seasons. His ultimate achievements came in 1933-34. Gardiner played for the All-Stars in the Ace Bailey Benefit Game, led the NHL in shutouts with 10 and won his 2nd Vezina Trophy. Although they scored fewer goals than any other team that season, the Hawks, mostly due to Gardiner's exploits, captured the team's first Stanley Cup. That summer Gardiner suffered a brain hemorrhage and died at the age of 29. His autograph is thus low in supply and high in demand. This gorgeous flowing fountain pen autograph crosses a section of the roster page cut from a 1933-34 GM hockey guide publication. The sig is bold and clear and measures about three inches across on the slightly larger cut (3" x 6"). Doug Young had also signed on the opposite side! Gardiner died in 1934 and was inducted into the Hall in 1945.
