A year after he washed away years of losing with his first Stanley Cup, Hall of Fame goalie Lorne "Gump" Worsley got to drink from hockey's holy grail all over again in the spring of 1966. Offered here is the late Gumper's Montreal Canadiens 1965-66 Stanley Cup championship gold and diamond ring commemorating the Habs' six-game win over the Detroit Red Wings. Gump went 8-2 with a 1.99 goals-against-average in the spring of 1966 as Henri Richard scored a controversial Cup winner in overtime of Game 6 that allowed the Canadiens to defend their title.
Originally obtained from a member of the Worsley family, this 10K gold beauty features four real diamonds set in the tableau surrounding a raised gold image of the Stanley Cup. The surrounding bezel reads: "World Hockey Champions" in raised gold. "Worsley" is stamped in a banner above the NHL shield on the left shank while the right shank has "1965-66" stamped in a banner above the CH crest in raised gold. "10K" is stamped inside the size 10 1/2 band. Among the documents originally obtained with the ring are a copy of the May 7, 1966 sports section of the Montreal Star with a photo of Worsley and his family on the cover, a Montreal General Hospital 1956 record of birth of one of his sons, a shot of Worsley with Gordie Howe and Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and a family snap shot of Worsley. Clearly worn with pride, the Cup on the tableau has smoothed somewhat though overall the ring remains in wonderful condition. A fabulous championship ring with a Hall of Fame pedigree from the midst of the Canadiens' Quiet Dynasty of the 1960s.
