The Morenz family moved from a smaller town to Stratford, Ontario in 1917. It was a great move for a young Howie Morenz as he had a chance to play hockey at a more organized and higher level. He had always been the fastest skater and a great puck carrier, but he really developed into a star hockey player in Stratford. In fact, Morenz became such a star as an amateur that they dubbed him the Stratford Streak. This ancient cabinet photo portrays Howie Morenz as a member of the Stratford GTR Apprentice team, 1922-23 League Champions. Morenz appears in the centre of the back row and he is listed on the matting below as captain. The photo shows its age with three small areas of paper loss and, although all titles and names are legible, the matte is in good condition at best. Still, a historic find from the dawn of one of the game's greatest careers and heartbreaking stories.
