Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010

A significant discovery, this unassuming old cream durene speaks volumes to fans of sports movies and those who followed the career of the great Paul Newman. The 1977 release of "Slap Shot" featured Paul Newman leading a losing industrial league hockey team, the Charlestown Chiefs", on to victory by adding heaping portions of violence into the mix. Now a cult classic, Slap Shot is still one of the top rented movies in North America. Fan favorites, the Hanson Brothers, played by Steve Carlson, Jeff Carlson and Dave Hanson of World Hockey Association fame, were the hit of the film and the trio has made a career of re-enacting their famous roles at various charity events and games across North America. This immensely-important wardrobe piece was worn throughout the filming by the flick's star Paul Newman portraying the main character, Reggie Dunlop. The now-famous number "7" appears on the arms and again on the back in two-tone tackle twill with more of the same material spelling out "Chiefs" across the front. A faded Charlestown All-American City shield crest sits up on the left shoulder. Tagged in the neck by Rawlings in size 46, the jersey shows light use and evidence of washing with a few faded stains and marks. Without a doubt, this is the absolute grail of movie-worns! Obtained from the film's producer, Robert J. Wunsch, who has had the shirt in his collection since 1977 and it will come with his signed letter of authenticity.
