This 1989 International Ice Hockey Federation world championship gold medal was presented to a member of the champion U.S.S.R. squad. The Soviet national team was as dominant as ever at the 1989 world hockey championships in Sweden, going a perfect 10-0 to claim its fifth gold medal of seven world championship tournaments staged by the IIHF during the 1980s. Offered here is a 1989 IIHF gold medal presented to a member of the Soviet team which featured HOFers Fetisov & Larionov, and fellow Green Unit members Makarov, Krutov and Kasatonov. Each was presented with this gold medal along with the likes of Fedorov, Kamensky, Bykov, Byakin, Khomutov, Khymlev, Kvartalnov and Nemchinov, among others. "World Championships" is spelled out in raised letters around the face of the 2 5/8" diameter gold medal, with "1989" on the clasp at the top which retains the medal's original blue-and-yellow ribbon. The IIHF logo on the reverse features a globe with red and blue enamel paint.
