Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/16/2010
The image is fixed and familiar: Yvan Cournoyer and Paul Henderson embracing to celebrate the most famous goal in hockey history. Although everyone remembers the Henderson goal, many forget that it was Cournoyer who netted the tying marker at 12:56 of the 3rd period in game 8 to set up the dramatic finish.
Offered is Yvan Cournoyer's game-worn and conclusively photo-matched Team Canada uniform from the incredible 1972 Canada vs. Russia Summit Series. The familiar white durene knit uniforms from the historic international tournament, worn for all four games played on Soviet soil, are seldom offered and recent sales of game-worn examples have reached record price levels. The well-publicized auction of Paul Henderson's historic series-winning-goal jersey saw a world record price of well over a million dollars.
This striking heavy knit sweater features a stylistic maple leaf rising up from the waist in red. The number "12" is sewn onto the back beneath the word "CANADA" in single-layer tackle twill. The manufacturer's black and gold "Tricot Sport Maska" tag is stitched into the collar beside remnants of another tag, long since removed. This one, worn by Cournoyer, has been altered to his specifications. The waist has been hemmed up to make the shirt shorter (shown in action shots from the games), the cuffs have been cut short and the inside layer of red material beneath the white Maple Leaf has been trimmed out to make the jersey lighter. We have also seen this customization on a few other game worn jerseys from the Series. Game wear is immediately obvious with stick marks and slashes littering the lower front and arms. The v-neck has been torn and pilling appears inside the sleeves at the seams. Swipes of red board paint appear in a few areas on the sleeves and one series of three red and black marks at the right cuff has been matched to two different photographs taken during the Series. Digital images of the match will be copied onto a CD and included with the lot. This Hall-of-Fame-worthy jersey is simply stunning. Please note that this item may be subject to a silent reserve and comes complete with a letter of authenticity. [red] Addendum; Comes with Yvan Cournoyer signed LOA.[/red]
