Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/16/2010
Great find is this lot of 8 rare early 1960s Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings ceramic tiles which were never sold to the public, likely because of licensing problems. Featured here are 6" x 6" tiles depicting individual players such as the Habs' Henri Richard, Phil Goyette, Bobby Rousseau, Ralph Backstrom and Jean Gauthier, Maple Leafs Red Kelly and Ron Stewart, and Red Wings center Norm Ullman, along with two original boxes. The Kelly, Stewart, Rousseau and Goyette tiles are in chip-free, excellent-plus condition. The Backstrom tile has a tiny bit of paint loss on the right glove and the Gauthier tile exhibits slightly muted colors and a few surface scratches. The Richard tile has a repaired diagonal crack through the lower right corner and the Ullman tile has a chip in the middle of the top edge and scratches on the surface. "H.M. Cowan" on each tile is likely the artist's name and "Screenarts Products Ltd., Made in Canada" is stamped on the top of the cork backing on the reverse.
