Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/16/2010
Great stash of The Great One's forever-in-demand 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee rookie card is offered here, with yes, 30(!) examples picturing Wayne Gretzky looking up, up, up, setting his sights on the records of hockey legends who came before him. Most hockey observers knew that this kid was something special but who could ever imagine the fashion in which he pulverized scoring marks while rewriting the NHL record books. A wide range of grades are included here with close to one-third (9/30) having been encapsulated by the KSA grading company. Top marks go to two 8-NMM examples, with three others just behind at 7.5 (NM+). One NM 7, two at EX 5 and one at VG 3 complete the graded group. As for the raw copies the lowdown, in our eyes, is as follows: Two are EX, with, however, one off-center, (5) are VG-EX, (3) are VG and (2) are G-VG. Another seven are "Good", with the final two P-F, one of them featuring minor paper loss on the back. Oh, from the days when packs were ripped open and cards were tossed around with not much attention paid to conserving them in primo condition - luckily a certain percentage survived in nice shape! We can think of several possibilities with this seldom-offered quantity of Gretz RCs and are sure you're contemplating your options right about now! Good luck with this thought-provoking, tempting lot.
