Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/16/2010
A sensational pre-war group of little treasures is offered here, with the elusive Maple Crispette cards of 1924-25 highlighted by the presence of four Montreal Canadiens' legends, while just four cards are missing to complete this highly coveted set. The second-year cards of Howie Morenz and Aurele Joliat, and those of Georges Vezina and Newsy Lalonde are technically lower grade than their appearance due to the tiniest of pinholes in the middle of the top and bottom borders. Otherwise, Vezina (diamond-cut), Joliat and Lalonde are crease-free and VG-EX, while Howie has two horizontal creases through the middle. Wonderful, thought-provoking images are joined by those of players from the Canadiens, Maroons, Bruins and Hamilton Tigers. Majority of the remainder (18/21) also have the aforementioned pinholes, the exceptions being 2-Benedict (G), 10-R. Green (G) and 20-Carroll (VG+). Very few creases with the rest; they display rather well indeed and include Hall-of-Famers Punch Broadbent and "Shorty" Green (both crease-free). One card has been professionally graded by SGC which deemed #4-Curly Headley a VG 3. Cards not present are 11-Boucher, 19-Rothschild and 21-Burch, as well as the next-to-impossible-to-find Sprague Cleghorn (#15), the card that was short-printed by the Montreal company so as not to have to remit too many pairs of free skates in a promotion on the card backs. Marvelous opportunity here for lovers of pre-war cardboard.
